CTV vs. Traditional TV: Think “Different Strengths,” Not “Winner”
The right answer depends on reach, audience precision, creative, geography, and how the rest of the media mix is built.
The CTV-versus-traditional-TV conversation usually gets framed as a competition with a winner, which is a strange way to talk about two tools that are good at different things. The more useful question is not which one is better, but which job needs doing.
Where traditional broadcast still holds up
Broadcast television is still one of the most efficient ways to reach a large, broad audience in a single buy, particularly for live events, local news, and appointment-viewing content where a meaningful share of the audience is still watching in real time. Measurement is well established, and for a brand trying to build broad market awareness fast, that reach-in-one-buy efficiency is hard to replicate.
Where connected TV pulls ahead
CTV brings the targeting precision of digital media into the television screen: audience and geographic targeting well beyond broad demographics, frequency control so the same household is not seeing an ad forty times, creative that can rotate or update mid-flight, and reporting that looks like digital reporting instead of a broadcast ratings estimate. For an advertiser without a broadcast-scale budget, it is often the only realistic way to get premium video creative in front of a defined audience.
How they tend to work together
In practice, the two are frequently complementary rather than competing: broadcast for broad-reach moments, CTV to extend frequency and precision around a more specific target audience, with both feeding the same creative idea rather than running as separate, disconnected buys. Treating them as one video strategy with two delivery methods, instead of a bracket with a winner, is usually the more productive frame.
The actual decision points
The real questions are about budget scale, how precisely the audience needs to be defined, whether the campaign needs to update creative quickly, and whether the objective is broad awareness or a more specific, trackable response. Those answers point toward a mix — not a single winner.
