Why More Channels Do Not Automatically Mean a Better Plan
A smaller, coordinated media mix can outperform a scattered plan where every tactic competes for a tiny piece of the budget.
It is tempting to treat a media plan like a menu: the more channels on it, the more complete it looks. In practice, a channel added to a plan without enough budget behind it to actually work rarely adds reach — it just divides the existing budget one more way, until nothing in the plan is funded well enough to do its job.
The math problem hiding in a long channel list
Every channel has a minimum level of investment below which it does not really function: not enough impressions to reach frequency, not enough budget to get meaningful search volume, not enough spend to generate a usable sample size for optimization. Split a modest budget eight ways and it is entirely possible that all eight channels sit below their own functional minimum — each one technically "running," none of them actually working.
Signs a media mix has gotten too wide
A few patterns tend to show up: no single channel has enough budget to optimize meaningfully, nobody can explain what unique job more than one or two of the channels are doing, reporting takes longer to compile than it takes to act on, and the plan changed more because a new channel became available than because the audience or objective changed.
How to decide what to cut or consolidate
Start from the objective and the audience, not the channel list. For each channel, ask what specific job it is doing that no other channel in the plan is already doing, and whether it has enough budget behind it to do that job properly. Channels that pass both tests stay. Channels that exist mostly because they were available, or because "more channels" felt safer than committing to fewer, are usually the first ones worth cutting — and the budget freed up from cutting them often makes the remaining channels perform better, not worse.
